Sea Buckthorn Berries

Sea buckthorn might be having a big moment right now, but it’s actually been used for centuries around the world for its many healing properties. Not only is it TikTok’s latest viral trend, but its healing history is actually almost as ancient as the plant itself. In cultures around the world, this magical plant has been revered for its countless medicinal properties and has been used internally and externally from Ancient Greece to the Himalayan Mountains.

The plant grows in high elevations as a shrub like tree, and almost every part of the sea buckthorn plants can be used. From the luscious ripe berries to the leaves and seeds, it has countless uses and benefits. It’s a popular superfood ingredient in many traditional cultures, used as medicine in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, and is an excellent skin treatment for a variety of skin concerns.

Sea buckthorn berries are small, and somewhat resemble cranberries. They are edible, as well as medicinal. They are bright orange in color on the outside, and the inner flesh of the berry is a dark yellow when ripe. The flavor of the berries is tart and somewhat citrusy with a little bit of sweetness.

They are usually mixed with other foods or juices to make them more palatable as opposed to being eaten on their own. You might find them made into jams, baked into pies, juiced, dried and drank as teas, or used to create a powerful sea buckthorn berry oil extract that is used topically for its skincare benefits.

The history of sea buckthorn

Sea buckthorn has been an important plant in cultures spanning the entire globe for thousands of years. Experts have traced the use of this plant in healing remedies toMongolia, China, Tibet, and Ancient Greece. One of the earliest recorded use of sea buckthorn in healing can be traced back to rGyud Bzi, or The Four Books of Pharmacopoeia, which was an ancient Tibetan medical text during the Tang Dynasty from 618-907 AD. In the 8th century, another popular book, Djud-shi,  was written by the well known physician Yuthog Yontan Gonpo who chronicled more than 300 different medical preparations using sea buckthorn.

Over the centuries, it’s been a popular remedy in both Ayruvedic herbalism and Chinese Traditional Medicine, both of which are still popular practices today. During the 1940’s Russian scientists began researching the compounds found in different parts of the sea buckthorn plants including the leaves, fruit, and bark. Eventually they encouraged Russian cosmonauts to begin consuming the fruit for its healing benefits and formed a skin cream that was believed to help protect the space travelers from solar radiation.

The first studies on how to draw concentrates from the plan began in Romania in the 1950’s. Professor Ion Brad began to research the different biochemical compounds of sea buckthorn and performed studies about how it could be used in everything from medicine to skincare and makeup. Texts from this time period refer to sea buckthorn as “the medicinal berries of the Mother of God,” and “the strongest fruit with the divine oil.”
